Ethnic origins of Forbes world billionaires (2013)

The ethnic breakdown I come up with for the March 2013 update of Forbes' "The World's Billionaires" list:

No. %
Northwestern European 415 29.10
Asian or Pacific Islander 313 21.95
Jewish 249 17.46
Middle Eastern or Central Asian 120 8.42
Eastern European 95 6.66
Southern European 84 5.89
(New World) Hispanic or Brazilian 75 5.26
South Asian 69 4.84
Black 6 0.42
total 1426 100

Particularly for Eastern Europe, individual classifications may be less accurate than my classifications of US billionaires, but the overall breakdown should be reasonably close to reality. I may have incorrectly included a few people in the Jewish list, but if anything probably incorrectly left off a larger number -- my Jewish category should be more accurate/comprehensive than Forbes Israel's "Richest Jews" list in any case. Note that I've arbitrarily chosen to include Tatars in the Middle Eastern category, along with Armenians, Azerbaijanis, etc. Mongoloid-appearing Kazakhs were included in the Asian category. I generally put Latin Americans with Northern European or Italian names (who were not obviously mestizo) in the appropriate European category.

Тhere is zero evidence that Vadim Novinsky is Jewish. Almost certainly he is Russian. Common Russian surname, father's name is stereotypically Russian, wife is Russian, and Jews making lists of rich Jews don't include him in the lists: http://base.ijc.ru/new/site.aspx?STID=245090&SECTIONID=244675&IID=462050

Lindsay Fox be Jewish

"Rinat Akhmetov $15.4 B 46 steel, coal Ukraine"

Wikipedia says his father was a Tatar, who are Muslims. He's a Slavic looking blond. He doesn't sound, however, like somebody whose business you'd want to poke into!

Alexander M. Kim said...

Akhmetov is half-Tatar (a descendant of the Volga Tatars who migrated to the Donbas region in Russian imperial times). Blondism is common among them anyways, but I believe his mother is Ukrainian. The Jewish claim is not substantiated by Russian and Ukrainian sources, including Russian-language Israeli media (e.g., http://izrus.co.il/oligarhi/article/2013-04-18/20980.html). How he's classified now I'll leave up to you.

I assume the source of that mis-ID was the Hebrew international edition of Forbes that purported to rank the 165 richest Jews in the world. The list is evidently peppered with anomalies, of which Akhmetov is only one of the most glaring. Jewishness doubtful for Mikhail Prokhorov ($13 B, Russian) and Alexander Abramov ($4.6 B, Russian), Orthodox philanthropist and Knight of the Order of St. Sergius. Seemingly wrongly overlooked as a Slav: Vadim Moshkovich ($2.1 B, Russia), a member of the Presidium of Russian Jewish Congress.

At any rate, I think it's rather arbitrary to put Kazakhs (roughly 70% East Eurasian) in the "Asian" category while Uzbeks (roughly 40-50% East Eurasian) get called "Middle Eastern". Maybe there should be a separate Turkic category – aside from Kazakhs and Turkey-Turks, that's where many of the "Middle Eastern" Russian/CIS records would more properly belong (e.g., Alisher Usmanov $17.6 B: Uzbek; Vagit Alekperov $14.8 B: Azeri; Iskander Makhmudov $8.7 B: Uzbek; Alijan Ibragimov $2.1 B: Kyrgyzstan-born Uyghur).

Alexander M. Kim said...

I was misinformed; Akhemetov appears to be fully Tatar (his mother was born Nyakiya Nasredinovna).

Thanks for the comments. I moved Vadim Novinsky and Rinat Akhmetov.

Alexander Abramov: Tentatively moved. How common or uncommon is it for Russians without Jewish ancestry to be named Abramov?

Lindsay Fox: His father is said to have been a truck driver. I'm not saying there are no diasporic Jewish truck drivers, but this is one of the things that for me tilts the odds against. He received some award from B'nai B'rith, but so did John Howard. If there's direct evidence he's Jewish, please let me know. In terms of appearance, he could be taken for Jewish at a glance, but I think it's likely he just has a depressed-tip / projecting-columella Irish nose expanded by age.

Mikhail Prokhorov: According to the New York Times, "Prokhorov’s maternal grandmother, Anna Belkina, was a prominent microbiologist who during the war stayed in Moscow to make vaccines while Tamara was moved east to safety. Belkina was Jewish but avoided the fate of many of her colleagues who were fined, exiled or killed during the tide of anti-Semitism that swept through Soviet society after World War II."

"I assume the source of that mis-ID was the Hebrew international edition of Forbes that purported to rank the 165 richest Jews in the world."

Multiple other Jewish publications have also listed Rinat Akhmetov as Jewish. It may (or may not) have started with a 2009 JTA article pointing out "Three of Ukraine’s four billionaires are Jewish". Rinat Akhmetov was the 1 out of 4, but this may not have been obvious to people rapidly skimming the article.

'I think it's rather arbitrary to put Kazakhs (roughly 70% East Eurasian) in the "Asian" category while Uzbeks (roughly 40-50% East Eurasian) get called "Middle Eastern".'

Yes, it's arbitrary, but that's where I chose to draw the line.

I agree a separate Turkic or Central Asian category would make sense, but I kept the number of categories restricted for reasons of convenience and practicality. I will however add Central Asian to the name of the "Middle Eastern" category to make this more clear.

Forgot to mention I moved Vadim Moshkovich. I've also now moved David Shaw and Michael Kadoorie to the Jewish section.

Steve Sailer said...

Here's a methodological idea. This would be a lot of work, so it would be better for the smaller, better-documented American Forbes 400 list.

Say, you added two columns. One would be fraction of ancestry documented not Jewish (e.g., Steve Ballmer would be 0.5). The other column would be fraction of ancestry documented Jewish (e.g., Steve Ballmer would be 0.5, while, judging from the quote above, Mikhail Prokhorov would be 0.25 with the rest unknown.)

n/a said...

Steve,

I think that would be too far past the point of diminishing returns for me.

If I do this again, I'll try to point out people whose Jewish ancestry is know to be fractional; but for most of the people with both parents Jewish or all four grandparents Jewish (which would be the vast majority of people listed in the Jewish category on these lists), to actually confirm this would take probably at least 10-20 times the amount of time/work as just establishing a preponderance of evidence that they're Jewish or have recent Jewish ancestry.

Steve Sailer said...

I looked up 20 people on your Forbes 400 list but not on Forbes Israels. For the majority of the 20, Wikipedia says "born to Jewish parents" or "his parents were Jewish immigrants" or the like, making it explicit that they were fully Jewish. For others, But it would be nice to have denoted individuals who are known to be not fully Jewish like Ballmer, Bren, and Irsay. (The 1986 Sports Illustrated story about Irsay's dad, the most hated NFL owner ever, is hilarious.)

n/a said...

I think "born to Jewish parents" is just the preferred Wikipedia euphemism for "ethnically Jewish" (not necessarily an indication anyone has actually confirmed both parents are Jewish). I had in mind actually looking up parents/grandparents, and tracing farther back if necessary, which would be time prohibitive.

I commend you on producing such lists, as I know the time and work involved in doing so.

I have done a lot of investigating into famous people, financiers, politicians, lawyers, professors, and more.

It seems to me that you are strict -- in a good way -- about who you identify as jews.

But since I have done much research into secret jews, termed "crypto-jews," I know that the lists such as on this page are woefully misleading. Actually, the percent of jews is far higher.

As easy examples: Bill Gates and David Rockefeller are jews, but you don't have sources that convince you, so you have them as "Europeans." (I do not fault you for that.) That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Of course, you don't have Pres. Barack Obama in a list of billionaires, but his mother was not White; she was a jew. That makes Barack Obama a jew. Most people scoff at that fact. But that fact is an indication of how big the iceberg really is.

Interesting demographics:

Jews are .2 % of the world population and 17% of world billionaires.
Blacks are 25% of the world population and .42% of world billionaires.
Whites are 51% of the world population and 51% of the world billionaires.

These statistics speak to something greater than simply the "notion" that the Jewish people are Gods chosen people, which I do not believe - but that Jews have done something very important amongst themselves over the centuries. They have used psychological priming to achieve success by telling generation after generation that they are special in turn creating within their minds and ethnic group a sense of great worth which transpired into phenomenal success.

"These statistics speak to something greater than simply the "notion" that the Jewish people are Gods chosen people, which I do not believe - but that Jews have done something very important amongst themselves over the centuries. They have used psychological priming to achieve success by telling generation after generation that they are special" - That doesn't mean anything. Psychosis and real action are two separate things. You can tell someone they're special all you want, and whether or not they achieve something is in their capacity to do it.

"...in turn creating within their minds and ethnic group a sense of great worth which transpired into phenomenal success." - Again, we're provoking psychology here. Blacks have more narcissism and confidence than Jews do, yet don't accomplish half as much. All I'm getting here is "Jews are successful because they're successful" which is a circular argument. Most of these Jews also have significant white ancestry.

Plus, the source on Prokhorov on whether he is Jewish is hardly a credible source. Most times you have to seek their actual family trees.

The myth that Lenin was a Jew is such an example. I'm not sure why people obsess over who is or who isn't a Jew, but I assume it's for a Who's Who list.

@James - ouu, crypto Jews. I'm scared.

The Rockefellers have German and English ancestry. Hardly any Jewish blood. But it is likely a family member or some cousin mingled with one; can't help the lads. So they are European. Even the Rothschilds have significant European ancestry. They have aquiline noses.

As for your "much research" - that is woefully misleading.

@n/a here is more info on the name "Abramov":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abramov

Semitic, maybe, but not explicitly Jewish.

@Sailer some Tatars are directly from the Caucasus and do not have Islam as their religion. It's few and far in between but they exist.

As for the "3 out of 4 Ukrainian billionaires are Jewish" I also am skeptical, but you have to consider that usually anybody that looks like a Jew is called one, even if they're not.

Lindsay Fox - no evidence there. Wikipedia is usually the first to say who is Jewish or not.

Double-checked some of the "Jewish" names, and the actual people aren't even Jews.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Lisin - says he is Russian.

He is also listed under "Russian billionaires."

He is also a metallurgical expert, so not a waste there.

Oleg Deripaska is not listed as Jewish.

John Paulson's background is from Ecuador, Norway, and French. His mother was from Ecuadorian. No Jewish ancestry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Paulson

Alexey Kuzmichev is not listed as Jewish, but he was born on the Soviet/Chinese border.

Ronald Perelman is an Orthodox Jew, which is more of the traditional side of Judaism. It has experience a rise in converts along with secular Jews.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyotr_Aven - Not fully Jewish; half Russian and Latvian. So he is considered Russian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vyacheslav_Kantor - Not listed as Jewish, probably called a Jew because of his support of Jewish affairs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Jacobs - Not fully a Jew, regularly donates to charities.

John Fisher - Doesn't sound Jewish, and the Gap is losing money.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Mashkevitch - His parents are from Belarus and Lithuania, and he has mostly Kazakh ancestry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lily_Safra - Brazilian and British. Not wholly Jewish.

It is understandable or easier to label them as Jewish because it is a minority, but it's not so easy as it seems.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabeth_Badinter - French.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esther_Koplowitz - Cuban, father was a German Jew. Not wholly Jewish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sara_Blakely - No mention. Is likely not Jewish.

Daisy Igel - Brazilian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Brandes - American.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Berggruen - Not fully Jewish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tory_Burch - No mention of Jewish ancestry.

There's more, but it's likely that most of the names under the Jewish section either aren't Jews at all or are not fully Jews. Plus, it is worth mentioning that most of them started out in working-class or poor families. So it's not entirely a scam, there.

Pretty much everything the previous commenter said is false.

Nicholas Woodman is not Jewish. I think you are most clearly off when it comes to tech billionaires.

Conor said...

As is morgridge.

n/a said...

In these two cases, I believe you're right. Morgridge and Woodman do not appear to have any obvious Jewish ancestry. My Jewish categories in these lists were initially seeded with lists from Jewish publications, with my own additions/corrections and corrections from commenters incorporated. I missed these two when cleaning up the lists.

(The basis on which the Jewish publication included Morgridge as a Jew is that he's involved with some Israeli foundation. I also would not be overly surprised if his wife, Tashia Frankfurth, turned out to be Jewish. Woodman's mother remarried a Jew; I have no information on whether or not his mother's "Hispanic descent" includes sephardic Jewish ancestry, but in the absence of evidence in that direction I'll move him to the Hispanic list.)

Druckenmiller is another case of a likely error carried over from the original JTA list. This was pointed out to me by a commenter in a different thread some time ago. I could find no evidence of Jewish ancestry for Druckenmiller (though I could find no information whatsoever on his mother's ancestry), so I'll also remove him from the list in this update, which I'll probably do in a few days.

Please point out any other actual errors, if you're able to find any.

I've only been talking about American tech people 'cause that's the industry that I know, but a cursory sample of the list you provide shows it's way off except in American hedge funds and American media. Incidentally, those are the two things that I know for a fact Jews have a huge influence. But you say you don't care, so I'll leave you to your list. Forbes Israel's list is pretty accurate, though I'm flabbergasted they left out Redstone!

n/a said...

Dude, are you trolling, or are you fucking retarded?

The Forbes Israel list was my starting point for this list. It was remarkably bad. The list shown here is without question more accurate (though, as mentioned, I expect the world billionaires list to contain more errors than the Forbes 400 lists).

As I repeatedly told you, I welcome any actual corrections. I don't welcome unsupported pronouncements and sweeping dismissals that reflect nothing beyond your lack of knowledge and lack of knowledge of your lack of knowledge.

Note also that a handful of corrections to a list that contains hundreds of people does not materially affect the overall finding of extreme Jewish over-representation.

n/a ( Non applicable) is an appropriate pseudonym for an individual that is, obviously, attempting to assume the air of an intellect. your vocabulary is limited and your respect for those that might see your written word is wanting. I guess immaturity is a prerequisite, these days for interacting with ones peers and the world at large.

n/a, I have found your list to be extremely useful and one of is kind on the internet. Thanks very much for taking the trouble to classify. Would be great if you can address the latest Billionaires list since the number has expanded significantly.

I do not think Margarita Louis-Dreyfus is Jewish. She got the name from her late husband Robert Louis-Dreyfus, who has a Jewish father. Her maiden name is Margarita Bogdanova and she was born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

Anonymous said...

no indeed she surely is not.

the jews intermarry at such a rate that they're effectively doing hitler's work.

nicky oppenheimer is at most 1/4 jewish and an episcopalian by profession.

the extant louis-dreyfuses are at most half jewish and none by profession, all roman catholic i believe.

but that other commodities trading giant Glencore is as jewish at it gets.

thankfully it's about to go bankrupt.

and, of course, commoditites trading "giants" are actually surprisingly small and unprofitable. none has a market cap over $50b afaik.

I do not think Xavier Niel is Jewish. I could not find any evidence of him being Jewish anywhere, not even on his Wikipedia Page. From this link http://www.terrepromise.net/archives/2294, (sorry it's in French), it does not list him being Jewish.

The numbers have changed significantly. This should be updated. The number of billionaires rose to 2210

The information herein is basically flawed and not based on scientific and archaeological evidence. The notion that Jews are classified under (above)'race' is inaccurate since it it a religion.Jews are in fact multi racial and not semitic as is falsely claimed. They are in fact predominantly Slavonic; that is Russian, ukrainian, Polish etc.The Prime minister of Israel is a Pole. He changed his name (as many do) from the Polish Milewski.

Also classifying people of the new world aslimited to Brazilians and other South Americans is inaccurate because it should include people from the USA.Columbus discovered the Americas (plural) he did not leave out the United States as does the author above.
