North-South IQ differences in Italy

Via Mangan's, a paper from Richard Lynn entitled "In Italy, north–south differences in IQ predict differences in income, education, infant mortality, stature, and literacy":
Regional differences in IQ are presented for 12 regions of Italy showing that IQs are highest in the north and lowest in the south. Regional IQs obtained in 2006 are highly correlated with average incomes at r=0.937, and with stature, infant mortality, literacy and education. The lower IQ in southern Italy may be attributable to genetic admixture with populations from the Near East and North Africa.
Lynn calculates average IQs ranging from 89 in Sicily to 103 in Friuli-Venezia.

  2. Interesting. 80% of Italian immigrants to the US came from the south, according to what I googled a while ago.

  3. n/a,

If you are looking for something to write about how about this:

    Swedish “Mudsharks”

Hunter Wallace once said that Guy “White” is of Italian ancestry. GW probably was inspired to write that post after some “Nordicist” made him feel insecure about his ethnicity.

I always love it when filthy dagoes show such hostility towards Northern Europeans. It makes us “Nordicists” look real good. I’m sure that quite a few “white nationalists” will realize that there’s no place for Meds within a white American ethnostate after reading that post!

  4. By the way, n/a, thanks for posting about this paper from Richard Lynn. I probably would have never come across it if you didn’t.

You know what, it was probably this very blog post that inspired Guy "White’s" attack!!!

Yes, "real good". Allow me to direct you to the Irish Savant.

    Irish Savant

His post, unfortunately, confirms much of what is known about the Swedes. Gorgeous people. Emasculated men due to virulent feminism. Very stupid women. By his count, 25-30% of couples he witnessed were beautiful Swedish women with Negro Muslims. Of course, these "stats" were in Stockholm where they would be skewed higher than in other parts, but Swedes are notoriously and fatally PC so I question how much different.

Happy now, Norditard? Or are the Irish "filthy" too? Don't answer that, I already know what you think.

Yeah, he's a real turkey that Silver.

All the more pity he can make a better case for both racialism (in general) and nordicism/'n.europeanism' than something like 99% of your activists then. You really think your guys can expect to change the world by coming at people with "Jost Turner"?

  7. The ethnic animus of Guy White and his audience is on full display in that post: you have a bunch of Southern Europeans, Jews, and mulattoes expressing their hostility toward Northern Europeans and extolling blacks, Jews, and Southern Europeans as manly men. Nordicist makes an excellent point regarding the pan-European and "pan-Aryan" "white nationalists."

    ZZZzzz...

A snore fest that, were it not for my general malaise, could be ripped to shreds for its utter lacking in accuracy and fact.

Guy White is part or half Jewish along with half Italian, if I remember correctly, though I do not have this great interest in following a loser that is exponentially worse than Loser Jobing of White America. Jobling at least has some cred, though only through past contact with Amren. He is becoming inconsequential and why people give this idiot, Guy White, any air time, is beyond me. He is and will continue to be a nobody with a blog.

I have no problem with Nordicism per se, but the small group of vocal Nordic turds remind me of passengers on a sinking ship complaining that their beds were not made. There is a time and place to complain about unmade beds, however, when we are looking straight in the face of European genocide, which is a civilizational catastrophe, you clowns come across as petty, selfish, and completely out of touch.

I thought the Italian national IQ average - country-wide - was 102, per Lynn?

So how do your numbers compute?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Landser,

You tell me. On which studies did Lynn base an estimate of 102 for Italy and which regions were represented?

    ReplyDelete
  12. n/a,

The 102 figure was listed of course (as you know) in his two books IQ and the Wealth of Nations and IQ and Global Inequality.

  13. Landser,

    Lynn writes:

In this paper we examine the possibility that the north–south difference in per capita income in Italy may be due to differences in intelligence. There is some existing evidence suggesting this may be the case. In northern Italy, Prunetti (1985) has reported a standardization of the Colored Progressive Matrices on 500 6–11 year olds in Pisa and the surrounding countryside, and Tesi and Young (1962) have reported a standardization of the Standard Progressive Matrices on 2462 11–16 year olds in Florence and the surrounding countryside. Both studies found that the mean IQ in northern Italy is approximately the same as in Britain and other countries of northern and central Europe. It has not proved possible to find normative data for IQs in the south of Italy. However, Peluffo (1962, 1964, 1967) has reported that the cognitive development of children in southern Italy and Sardinia (one of the poorest regions and part of the south) lags behind that of children in Genoa in northern Italy and in Switzerland in the performance of Piagetian tasks of the understanding of conservation and causality.

Tesi (1962) is one of the 2 sources for the 102 Italian IQ. I don't know where the other study's (Buj, 1981) samples came from.

  14. Below are calculations for an overall Italian IQ, using population counts from Wikipedia. Wikipedia doesn't show the region 'Abruzzi Basilicata' in Lynn's table, so I just combined Abruzzo, Basilicata, and Molise (small region between Ab. and Ba.).

    Column 1: region
    Column 2: population
Column 3: IQ (from Lynn's paper)
    Column 4: IQ x population

The last row shows the population total (excluding regions for which there was no IQ data) and the total for the product of population and IQ. The overall IQ was calculated by dividing this last value by the population.

    Friuli-Venezia 1222000 103 125866000
    Trentino 1007000 101 101707000

  15. I don't see what Lynn sees. He writes:

This also explains the north–south gradient of IQ in Italy in which the regional IQs do not show a clear dichotomy between north and south but rather a gradient in which IQs decline steadily with more southerly latitude. This gradient is shown by the latitudes of the regions given in the right hand column of Table 1. Here we see that the two most northerly regions of Friuli-Venezia and Trentino have the highest IQs (the same as those in central and northern Europe), and that regional IQs decline progressively with latitude to the five most southerly regions of Abruzzi Basilicata, Puglia Arulia, Campania, Sardinia and Sicily, which have the lowest IQs (89–92).

It doesn't make a lot of sense to speak of a gradual decline when data is missing for much of the middle part of the country (Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria, and Marche- not mentioned in the paper, though perhaps it is included in one of the other regions). To me, the data does not suggest a gradual decline between north (97-103, median and mean of 100) and south (89-92, median and mean of 90). This is also obvious when looked at on a scatterplot. There's a big gap in the latitude covered by data.

  16. Anonymous,

Thanks. Buj's samples come from the countries' capitals (i.e., Rome, in the case of Italy).

    Landser,

So there's your answer. As I would have guessed, no samples from Southern Italy went into Lynn's 102 estimate.

  17. So there's your answer. As I would have guessed, no samples from Southern Italy went into Lynn's 102 estimate.

    n/a,

Well, this certainly may be true, but its ridiculous on Lynn's part (and for his credibility) that he would have cited since 2002 the 102 figure as the national average figure for Italy as a whole.

If Lynn indeed left out the whole half of southern Italy out of his IQ projections for their country, then he is a very sloppy researcher.

These types of obvious glitches certainly doesn't bode well for the credibility of national IQ data, and opens itself up to critics charges that much of the IQ debate is polemical rather than objective.

(I can just imagine what the Zionist Jooz are going to say regarding the low figure he gave der Juden Stadt back in the same study).

  18. Landser,

Lynn is concerned with large, international trends. For this, he doesn't need absolute precision in any particular data point, and he works with the evidence that's available. Moreover, Italy is not typical. Most countries are more homogenous.

  20. This is false. In 2006 the Italian IQ was tested in Southern-Central Italy and still remain 102. THE MOST HIGH OF EUROPE.
