2010 Forbes 400 by ethnic origins

[Correction: Moved Frost to Jewish section; updated statistics accordingly.]

Forbes has published its list of the 400 richest Americans for this year. My current estimate of the ethnic breakdown of the list is shown in the far right column below:

The 2009 estimate is also mine, and I have used the same methodology as before. The 1987 estimate is Nathaniel Weyl's. The first thing I notice is that the Northwestern European proportion of the list continues to decline.

  1. Persons with over 130-IQ in the USA
    1.1-million : Jews
    3.4-million : NW-European-stock whites

    [Assumed: 7-mlln Jews, 115 as Jewish mean-IQ (normal); Assumed: 145-mlln NW-Europeans, 100 as our mean-IQ (normal).]
    --------------------

If the 130-IQ threshold is significant here, then we'd expect NW-European ("Nordish") whites to outnumber Jews on the list 3-to-1. That is: 30-to-10.

Nordish-whites actually outnumber Jews only 14-to-10, as per your findings. [50.75% to 35.75%].

    ReplyDelete
  2. Note: If the threshold were set at 145-IQ, statistically one would expect Nordish-whites to outnumber Jews only 12 to 10. [Using the above numbers].

AFAIK, though, it's been shown that IQ no longer correlates with success when it reaches that high.

I wonder if anyone's done an "IQs of the super-rich" study.

  3. // We'd expect NW-European whites to outnumber Jews on the list 30-to-10. //

A generation ago, this held true almost exactly!

    1987: List-making NW-Europeans outnumbered Jews 31 to 10. [72 / 23 = 3.13]

An IQ tunnel-visioner would interpret this to mean that Jews had risen to their natural potential within the wealth-elite by the 1980s, 100 years after they first began arriving. What happened in the 25 years after that (i.e. 1980s-2010) would cause Mr.IQ-Tunnel-Vision to scratch his head, puzzled, unable to explain how Jews have continued to advance "beyond their means" [IQ].

    So, amongst the IQ-130-plus population,

Expected: NW-European whites should outnumber Jews 30-to-10.
    but
Actual: NW-European whites actually outnumber Jews 14-to-10.

Put another way, if NW-European-stock whites are 50.75% of list, Jews should be 16.92%, based on population with IQ-over-130.

Actual Jewish representation: 35.75%, (211% their expected figure).

For those who don't know how I did these calculations, read up on standard deviations [IQ has a 15-point standard-deviation], and use a z-score table. It's quite simple.

Interesting comments. I don't have anything to add at the moment.

  6. The topic of Jewish success came up on Sailer's recently. Someone said Jews' strong presence at the top is natural for their intelligence.

Among the IQ-over-130 cohort, this is demonstrably false.

    I posted--

Considering that almost none of those [Forbes-400] Jews' ancestors were here 130 years ago (and a large share weren't even born here themselves), [their over-representation after controlling for IQ] is really amazing.

    Possible explanations for this phenomenon
Differential rates of: Ethnic-nepotism, ambition, business-savvy (Jews excelling in each); A possible white-American proneness to feelings of guilt about massive wealth accumulation, in the spirit of the Protestant-Work-Ethic (i.e., humble people -- no matter how productive -- rarely, if ever, become super-wealthy).

You have so many good sources: Keep your eyes peeled for an "IQ-of-the-Wealthy" study. So Jewish over-representation among the super-rich can be less-speculatively quantified when controlling for IQ.

  8. Jews are not smart, the only smart "jews" are the ones who have been intermarrying with European Europids for the past 2,000 years. Look at the jews who remained in their deserts, they as dumber than their arab neighbours.

  9. Robert Evans and Avrum Lapin identify David Koch as jewish in The Top Jewish Donors and Jewish Giving: Why the Disconnect?, at eJewish Philanthropy: The Jewish Philanthropy Blog. They leave themselves a little wiggle room in qualifying jewishness as "by birth or affiliation".

This is reminiscent of how Jacob Berkman put it in Baltimore Jewish Times - Cover Story | Jewish Philanthropy Navigates The Economy’s Rough Seas (now a dead link):

Those who we considered Jewish were of Jewish descent or openly identified as Jews, either personally or in their giving.

However disproportionate direct jewish representation is, it is compounded by the reality that there is little or no social or political stigma attached to pro-jewish "philanthropy", whereas specifically pro-WASP or pro-White sentiments, much less funding, are regularly pathologized as "hate", "racism", "supremacism", etc.

  10. For reference on determining Jewishness:
JeworNotJew.com. Written by a Jew. Not a rigorous/scholarly site, but interesting to peruse. They seem to take the matter seriously despite the typical-Jewish snidely-jokey manner.

They have a "Jew score" for each person:
    I: Inner (Ancestry)
O: Outer (How Jewish they look/act)
    K: "Jewish-Pride"

    OT below, but:
I like the entry on Chomsky. There's a lot of other good ones. Interesting who the site creator chose as entry-#1! (Lenin was also part Tatar -- The perfect New-Soviet-Man, mongrelized "past ethnicity"!)

...and do you remember the 1919 World-Series fix? Read about a Mr.Rothstein's hand in it. Did you really think a couple of guys with nicknames like "Shoeless Joe" came up with the idea to fix the World Series? Hehe.

  11. Tan,

The Koch brothers aren't Jewish and don't donate to Jewish organizations, as far as I know. They're known for supporting conservative and libertarian causes.

Some Jews are surprisingly bad at identifying other Jews. Possibly the authors you link to are confused by the fact that former NYC mayor Ed Koch is Jewish. The article complains the giving of major Jewish donors "has not been directed for Jewish priorities", though of course the reality is your last paragraph is correct and Jewish billionaires direct vastly more to Jewish causes than NW Euro billionaires do to NW Euro causes.

  12. "Look at the jews who remained in their deserts, they as dumber than their arab neighbours."
I remember when Charles Murray replied to Cochran & Harpending's paper on Ashkenazi IQ there was a discussion of Sephardic & Mizrahi IQ. Someone (I can't remember where) said that each group was about a standard deviation above its neighbors. But the Jews in Arab countries were deviating from a lower baseline. I'd like to see some actual numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't think it is a full sigma, but yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Not a full sigma in the case of the non-Ashkenazi groups, I mean.

I usually assume that the Ashkenazi number is whatever Cochran says, 112-5, though I know n/a thinks it is lower. I know 112-5 isn't technically 'a full sigma', but I'm rounding off here.

  15. And what mechanism do they suppose allowed non-European Jews to select for such higher-IQs than everybody else?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Easy. Per definition, Jews live in hostile enviroments. Only successful Jews are in a strong position to resist the pressure to assimilate. For example, if you were a slave or a peasant, you had to adopt your king's religion. All the English became Anglicans when the King quarreled with the Pope. Only rich traders and professionals could resist and buy the privilege of being different. In each generation, some 10 to 50% of the Jews fall out and disappear in the surrounding mass. Those continuing the line are self-selected for success and robustness.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Those continuing the line are self-selected for success and robustness.

"Success" and "robustness" are vague terms that can mean anything. For example, dung beetles that are selected for "success" and "robustness" are those that are exceptionally good at feeding on feces.

In the case of Jews, being selected for "success" and "robustness" meant specifically being selected for virulence:

    http://wiki.majorityrights.com/evolution/jewish_virulence

"A theory of Jewish virulence put forth by James Bowery is that it evolves from horizontal transmission of Jews between nations, in the form of repeated migration, since at least Babylonian times. Moreover, since diaspora Jews have become dependent on virulence for survival they promote immigration and naturalization laws that are friendly to horizontal transmission more generally [http://www.csulb.edu/~kmacd/ABERNET3.PDF] – resulting in virulence evolving in other populations. This makes Jewish virulence more analogous to immunosuppression virulence, such as HIV creates. This theory of Jewish virulence is complementary to both Kevin MacDonald's thesis documented in The Culture of Critique and to Richard Faussette's Niche Theory.

Under Bowery's hypothesis, Jewish virulence evolved from the following horizontal transmission cycle (see Richard Faussette's Niche Theory for a possible starting point):

1.Hyper centralization of net assets (communist, capitalist, monarchy—doesn’t matter)
2.Social breakdown as middle class (Yeomen) are unable to afford subsistence
3.Grab and convert wealth in easily transported forms (gold historically, diamonds more recently, etc.)
    4.“virulent antisemitism” breaks out
5.Emigrate leaving behind less “savvy” Jews to take the heat
6.Cry out for help to elites at destination nation while offering concentrated wealth to enter new cycle (see step 1)."

From the 400 are 5 Hungarians. Hungary population is 9 million. So you can do the math in %. The Hungarians outnumbers by % every race in the world with their outstanding knowledge and education. They are not Eastern Europeans! Their name is MAGYAR what means: the people of the knowledge. The Hungarian language more than six thousand years old and their education is one of the best in the world!!!

    I don't think that's true:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frost_%28surname%29

It seems like a generic English/British surname.

I can see why some Jews might adopt it when Anglicizing their names since it seems pretty generic.

  22. To clarify, I don't think that "Frost" is usually a Jewish surname, not that Philip Frost isn't Jewish.
