If so, one would expect advertisers to take advantage of such preferences by choosing “local” models when promoting clothing fashions and other products. A contrary view is that judgments of physical attractiveness are to a substantial degree neurologically “hard-wired” and evolved similarly throughout the world. With the assumption that fashion models and manikins are considered highly attractive, the present study recorded the race of models and manikins publically displayed in city malls in China, Malaysia, and the United States. Caucasian (white, European) models were found to be mainly utilized in all three countries, especially in regard to clothing fashion displays. Even advertisements for cosmetics and fashion accessories were “Caucasian-biased” in China and Malaysia although less so than in the U.S. and less so than advertisements for clothing fashions. It is a fact that the nature of political systems varies greatly from various autocracies to highly democratic systems. It is true that most contemporary countries have already crossed a minimum threshold of democracy, but there are persistent disparities in the level and quality of democracy. Why? Why has it not been possible for all countries to democratize and to establish an equal quality of democracy? That is the problem discussed and analyzed in this paper. It will be argued that the variation of political systems from the perspective of democracy reflects, in addition to the impact of many proximate factors, evolved human diversity and that, because of this diversity, it has not been possible to achieve the same level and quality of democracy in all parts of the world. This argumentation is based on the idea that because there are significant differences in the evolved mental abilities of populations (notably, national IQ) and because these differences affect social preconditions of democracy (resource distribution), there must be considerable differences in the level and quality of democracy. These differences will most probably persist because their roots can be traced via resource distribution (IPR) to differences in average national intelligence and, to some extent, to differences in annual mean temperature. The course in question is an introduction to writing for first-year undergraduates at a Canadian university. They submitted their first full-length papers of the term a week ago, and we've been dutifully marking them with the intention of handing them back next week.
We've been extra-rigorous when it comes to checking these papers for plagiarism, both because it's the first real work they've submitted and because of a memo sent out to our department back in late August urging every instructor to take greater measures. We've been cross-checking passages (especially suspicious ones, but also some that have been randomly chosen) using Google all along the line. We have been finding plagiarists.
Specifically, we have found six plagiarists (out of a class of 50).
All of them are black. And there are no other black students in the class.
My prof and I are both pretty sure that other students have probably plagiarized (it happens so, so much), but these are the only ones we can definitively prove. It's not even circumstantial or flimsy proof, either; complete, shitty, largely unaltered papers taken directly from sites like this. Anyone with a search engine could find them.
It would seem to be an open and shut case, but the fact that every last one of the students is black is making us hesitate. I don't know what it's like in other countries, but in Canada we have a well-established Human Rights Commission that would be all too happy to accommodate some or all of these students bringing both my professor and me up on charges of racial discrimination. It wouldn't even matter if we were to be eventually vindicated; the process is really expensive and time-consuming, and many people who have to deal with it end up settling even though they maintain their innocence. This, anyway, is quite apart from anything the university itself might do to us, which is another story entirely.
It's possible that our worries are unfounded, but we still have them - these things have happened before. How on earth should we proceed? I have a question about who is white (I'm sure its been asked before).
ReplyDeleteHow "pure" does someone need to be? If they know of a nearly complete non white ancestor 7 generations back (1/128) can the person still be considered white. Keep in mind that nearly all people cannot even show their geneology uo to 7 generations. Nor could they know if two ancestors were half non white 8 generations ago.
As for a more technical question, can race even be defined to within 1/128 parts genetically?
Most races, including whites, are made up of different populations from the past, which are NEARLY evenly distributed throughout the race. Some of those past populations that make up a race were quite dissimilar such as siberian-like, Indian-like, and amerindian-like (at least for finns) in the white race. Since this atypical heritage would be throughout the white race but not perfectly even because of natural variation, could race be defined to within say 1/100 or 1/500 parts? (Note, I'm NOT attacking the existence of race. I only wonder if purity can exist beyond a,certain level due to natural variation)
This is probably too nuanced but does it matter what that 1/128 non white is?

It faced criticism due to this and was pressured to "diversify". Nordish includes some other-European admixture.
No population is 100% Nordic, or for that matter no population is 100% White or European, all populations have a small degree of admixture, some more than others.
The Irish have some of the lowest levels of non-White/non-European admixture in Europe, so by that measure they are more White and more Nordish than most.

Implicit in the concept of ethnocentrism is the idea that people will consider members of their own race or ethnic group to be more attractive than members of other groups. If so, one would expect advertisers to take advantage of such preferences by choosing “local” models when promoting clothing fashions and other products. A contrary view is that judgments of physical attractiveness are to a substantial degree neurologically “hard-wired” and evolved similarly throughout the world. With the assumption that fashion models and manikins are considered highly attractive, the present study recorded the race of models and manikins publically displayed in city malls in China, Malaysia, and the United States. Caucasian (white, European) models were found to be mainly utilized in all three countries, especially in regard to clothing fashion displays. Even advertisements for cosmetics and fashion accessories were “Caucasian-biased” in China and Malaysia although less so than in the U.S. and less so than advertisements for clothing fashions. Findings call into question the relevance of ethnocentrism in determining the choice of fashion models used in advertising, and are instead consistent with other evidence of universal standards of physical beauty that advertisers rely on to help promote their products.

Supporters of differential psychology and eugenics were allowed to freely reflect on the importance of individual differences, on how to avoid dysgenic development, and even on how to improve the human condition. This basic proviso for meaningful scientific inquiries changed radically around 1950 when the topics were banned and their adherents demonized, despite supportive evidence. The present paper provides examples of typical attacks and analyzes the reasons for this bizarre deviation from normal science. It points to some of the people and institutions responsible, discusses the unfair tools they use, and illustrates how damaging their inexcusable intellectual corruption has been for the academic life at many modern universities. On the Evolutionary Limits of Democratization

It is a fact that the nature of political systems varies greatly from various autocracies to highly democratic systems. It is true that most contemporary countries have already crossed a minimum threshold of democracy, but there are persistent disparities in the level and quality of democracy. Why? Why has it not been possible for all countries to democratize and to establish an equal quality of democracy? That is the problem discussed and analyzed in this paper. It will be argued that the variation of political systems from the perspective of democracy reflects, in addition to the impact of many proximate factors, evolved human diversity and that, because of this diversity, it has not been possible to achieve the same level and quality of democracy in all parts of the world. This argumentation is based on the idea that because there are significant differences in the evolved mental abilities of populations (notably, national IQ) and because these differences affect social preconditions of democracy (resource distribution), there must be considerable differences in the level and quality of democracy. These differences will most probably persist because their roots can be traced via resource distribution (IPR) to differences in average national intelligence and, to some extent, to differences in annual mean temperature. This argument will be tested by empirical statistical evidence covering 172 contemporary countries.

The course in question is an introduction to writing for first-year undergraduates at a Canadian university. They submitted their first full-length papers of the term a week ago, and we've been dutifully marking them with the intention of handing them back next week.
We've been extra-rigorous when it comes to checking these papers for plagiarism, both because it's the first real work they've submitted and because of a memo sent out to our department back in late August urging every instructor to take greater measures. We've been cross-checking passages (especially suspicious ones, but also some that have been randomly chosen) using Google all along the line. We have been finding plagiarists.
Specifically, we have found six plagiarists (out of a class of 50).
All of them are black. And there are no other black students in the class.
My prof and I are both pretty sure that other students have probably plagiarized (it happens so, so much), but these are the only ones we can definitively prove. It's not even circumstantial or flimsy proof, either; complete, shitty, largely unaltered papers taken directly from sites like this. Anyone with a search engine could find them.
It would seem to be an open and shut case, but the fact that every last one of the students is black is making us hesitate. I don't know what it's like in other countries, but in Canada we have a well-established Human Rights Commission that would be all too happy to accommodate some or all of these students bringing both my professor and me up on charges of racial discrimination. It wouldn't even matter if we were to be eventually vindicated; the process is really expensive and time-consuming, and many people who have to deal with it end up settling even though they maintain their innocence. This, anyway, is quite apart from anything the university itself might do to us, which is another story entirely.
It's possible that our worries are unfounded, but we still have them - these things have happened before. How on earth should we proceed? The idealist in me insists that we give these students the failing grades they deserve and maintain some spirit of academic integrity, but neither I nor the prof wish to have our careers ruined over something like this.
